On a wet afternoon in University Park, No. 21 SMU won with its defense rather than its usual high-powered passing game, beating Boston College 25–16 to improve to 4–1 (2–1 ACC).
Kendrick Raphael opened the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run, but Boston College answered with a 52-yard field goal from Luca Lombardo and a 43-yard touchdown pass from Mason McKenzie to running back Evan Dickens to take an early lead.
The game turned on a big defensive play. Marques White stripped McKenzie on a sack, and Aakil Washington recovered at the Eagles’ 13-yard line. Kevin Jennings, who entered the game leading the FBS in passing, found Randy Pittman Jr. for a 14-yard touchdown two plays later. Jennings added a short touchdown run and a 20-yard scoring pass to Derrick McFall.
White finished with three of SMU’s five sacks as the Mustangs’ defense piled up 13 tackles for loss and held BC to 1.8 yards per carry.
Boston College had chances late. On fourth-and-1 from the SMU 8, a wide-open pass to Cameron Kossmann fell incomplete. The Eagles then put together a 75-yard drive capped by McKenzie’s 6-yard touchdown pass to Danny Edgehille, but SMU recovered the onside kick to close it out. BC was hurt all day by 11 penalties for 95 yards. “We weren’t a disciplined team today,” head coach Bill O’Brien said, per Boston.com.

- Jennings: 20-of-30, 160 yards, 2 TD passes, 1 rushing TD
- McKenzie (BC): 208 passing yards, 2 TDs, 74 rushing yards
